The NBA Finals tipped off last night. Like the rest of us, Kevin Durant was watching from home. However, the free-agent-to-be has more pressing issues than who will win the championship between the Warriors and Cavs.
NBA free agency begins July 1st. Durant is the big-ticket item heading into the offseason. Asked about his impending free agency after the Game 7 loss to Golden State Durant said, “I mean, we just lost like 30 minutes ago, so I haven’t even thought about it.”
Whether you believe the seven-time All-Star or not, speculation about his future has started. Rumors are flying and numerous teams (Celtics, Clippers, Heat, Knicks, Lakers, Rockets, Spurs, Warriors and Wizards) are interested in securing Durant’s services for next season.
Where is Durant going?
Oklahoma City – the Thunder won 55 games this season and were one win away from the Finals. OKC has a young roster (top seven players are all 27 or younger) that is entering its prime. It is hard to imagine KD playing for another team but that’s what we all said before LeBron made The Decision.
Golden State – By the time July rolls around we could be talking about Durant teaming up with Stephen Curry and the two-time defending champions. That is a scary thought for the rest of the league but a strong selling point for Durant.
Washington – I’m coming home, I’m coming home… these are the words every Wizards fan wants to hear this summer. In addition to being a native of the D.C. area Durant would elevate the potential of a young Washington squad that includes three-time All- Star John Wall and backcourt mate Bradley Beal. Plus, getting out of the West theoretically makes advancing to the NBA Finals easier.
There are pros and cons for each team but if you have a strong opinion there is a prop for that. The good folks at Bovada.lv have offered up the following prop bet for those interested.
What team will Kevin Durant be on for game 1 of the 2016-2017 NBA Season?
- Oklahoma City Thunder: -270
- Any Other Team: +180
The prevailing wisdom is that Durant will sign a one-year contract with a player option for a second year to stay in OKC. The oddsmakers concur listing the Thunder as -270 favorites (bet $270 to win $100). The odds imply over a 70 percent chance that KD begins the season in Oklahoma. Only time will tell.
