The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 129-120 in Game 5 to clinch the NBA championship on Monday night. It is the second title for Golden State in three years and what many believe to be the beginning of a dynasty. The Warriors enter the offseason as historic favorites to repeat.
Fresh off the title win BetOnline has listed Golden State as -150 favorites to win next year’s championship. That is the biggest preseason favorite since 2006 according to SportsOddsHistory.
Consider that the Miami Heat, after winning back-to-back titles and making three straight Final appearances, were “just” +200 to three-peat in 2014. The implied odds of Miami winning that season was 33.3% while the odds suggest the Warriors will repeat 60.0% (150/(100+150)) of the time.
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are the second choice at +450. The Cavs are the only other team with single digit odds to win the title.
The San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics, conference finals runner-ups, are +1000 and +1600 respectively. The Houston Rockets are +2500 and no other team has odds better than +4000.
The Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings are the biggest longshots at +50000.
These odds could change if players like Chris Paul, Blake Griffin or Gordon Hayward change teams in free agency but the Warriors and Cavs will remain the favorites.
