The oddsmakers at Bovada just released updated odds for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. After winning the Summer League MVP, Lonzo Ball is the favorite.
The Los Angeles Lakers’ second overall pick took home the Most Value Player award in the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League after averaging 16.3 points, 9.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds. Ball looked every part of the star the Lakers need and is the 5/2 favorite to win the Rookie of the Year.
Dennis Smith saw the biggest improvement in his odds going from 16/1 to 3/1. The Mavericks rookie is expected to run the point in Dallas and will get a lot of opportunities to score, as he did in Summer League (17.3 points per game).
Ben Simmons, third favorite at 7/2, didn’t participant in Summer League this year as he continues to recover from a foot injury that cost him all of the 2016-17 season. The Sixers expect the former No. 1 overall pick to be ready for the start of the season.
Boston Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum (5/1) now has better odds than Markelle Fultz (9/1). Philly traded with Boston to take Fultz with the first pick of the draft. Fultz only played three quarters of a game during Summer League before suffering an ankle injury. If he is healthy he should get more playing time than Tatum on a young Sixers team.
If the Rookie of the Year race is anything like last year the odds will change throughout the season but three months from the start of the season Lonzo Ball is the favorite.
