The New England Patriots are heading back to the Super Bowl. What you might not know is that the Pats have been making bettors tons of money this season. Bill Belichick’s team has gone 15-3 against-the-spread, +$1,168.

On Monday’s episode of the Bill Simmons Podcast, Bill and Cousin Sal were discussing the Patriots gambling success. Bill asked if any other team had a better ATS record heading into the Super Bowl.

Using the Bet Labs database we pulled the numbers to answer the sports czar’s question. The Patriots are by far the most profitable of Super Bowl participants. The next best team was last year’s runner-up Carolina Panthers. Cam Newton and company was 13-5 ATS (+$762) before losing to the Broncos in the title game.

The Falcons have been pretty kind to gamblers as well this season. Atlanta is 12-6 ATS (+$571) and the team’s two playoff wins were enough that Matt Ryan is no longer the least profitable postseason quarterback.

Combined, the Patriots and Falcons are 27-9 ATS, +$1,739. This is the most profitable combination of Super Bowl participants in our database. The next best was Seattle and Denver in 2013-14, those squads were 23-11 ATS, +$1,131 before playing each other.

If the Patriots win and cover in Super Bowl 51 they will become the most profitable single-season team in our database. More than one title is riding on the outcome on Super Sunday.

It’s almost Super Sunday
