Before the season began, sportsbook Paddy Power offered odds on whether each team would make or miss the playoffs. Based on these odds, which NBA teams have surprised/disappointed at the All-Star break?
Using the “make playoff” lines we got the following projected postseason:
Seed | East | West |
---|---|---|
1 | Cleveland | Golden State |
2 | Boston | San Antonio |
3 | Toronto | LA Clippers |
4 | Indiana | Utah |
5 | Detroit | Memphis |
6 | Atlanta | Portland |
7 | Washington | OKC |
8 | Charlotte | Houston |
If the playoffs started today, all of the Eastern conference teams that were projected to play past the 82nd game of the season would except for Charlotte. The Hornets are 8 games under .500 but just three games back of the 8th seed. Another team to disappoint in the East is the Knicks. New York’s “Super Team” had the 9th best odds among Eastern conference teams to make the playoffs and is ten games under .500.
Philly has been a fun team to watch this season. The Sixers are the most profitable ATS team and have an outside chance of crashing the playoff picture. FiveThirtyEight.com gives the 76ers just a 1% chance to reaching the postseason but for anyone that bet $2,500 to win $100 that the team would miss the playoffs for a fifth straight year is sweating a little.

Out West, seven of the eight most likely playoffs teams would be in the postseason today. The lone exception, Portland (-225) has a 23-33 record and is currently 9th. The biggest surprise is the Rockets. Houston was projected to be the 8th seed but an MVP caliber season from James Harden has the Rockets pushing the Warriors and Spurs for the top seed in the conference. Denver was +190 to make the playoffs before the season began and would be the biggest longshot to come through for bettors if they hold onto the 8th seed.
