NBA Playoffs: Should you trust a Game 7 winner?

Stephen Curry and the Warriors are making a return trip to the NBA Finals after beating Oklahoma City 96-88 in Game 7 on Monday night.

Golden State has opened as clear favorites in Vegas to repeat after becoming just the tenth team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit. The Dubs are -210 favorites (bet $210 to win $100) to top the Cleveland Cavaliers for the championship.

There is a lot to like about the 73-win Warriors. In addition to setting the single season record for wins, the team boasts the two-time MVP in Curry. Golden State dominated opponents in the regular season with a point differential of 10.8 points (5th best all-time) and they can make it rain from outside – made a record 1,077 three pointers in the regular season.

For all of Golden State’s accomplishments, history tells us to be weary of a team that just won a series in seven games. Looking through our historical database, there are 33 teams that won a NBA Playoff series in seven games and played another series in the same postseason.

Of those 33 teams, only 13 went on to win the next series.

Why? Maybe the team is fatigued after playing a seven game series or the flaws that required the team to go the distance in the previous series are too much to overcome in the next.

Golden State is no ordinary team but can the Warriors best history and the fate of so many previous Game 7 winners?

We will find out tonight night when the NBA Finals tip off.
