Real basketball is almost here. The 2017-18 NBA season starts on October 17th but before the games really count we got the preseason. A novice bettor would think nothing of these warm-up games but season handicappers know this is another opportunity to profit.
Let’s bet the NBA preseason and to start we will focus on fading team that made the playoffs the season before.
Last season’s playoff teams are overvalued in the preseason. Typically, a team that reached the postseason the year before is less likely to give their big-name players heavy minutes while starters on a team that finished at the bottom of the standings will see more playing time.
Next, we want to focus on games where a team’s line got better. Using the “Spread Change Open to Close” filter we can find matchups where a team either became a bigger underdog or smaller favorite.
Being contrarian bettors it is usually a good idea to bet underdogs as the public likes backing the popular teams (favorites). Underdogs in this system (against a playoff team with positive line movement) have gone 275-221 (55.4%) ATS.
The sweet spot is betting big underdogs of at least 4.5 points.
Following this system Bet Labs users have been profitable nine straight years and covered over 60% against-the-spread in the preseason. The games don’t count but the profits are real.
