The Los Angeles Rams fired coach Jeff Fisher on Monday after he tied an NFL record with 165 losses. Fisher became the first of the NFL’s 32 coaches to be canned this year. By my count, Fisher is now the 21st head coach that has been fired in-season since 2003.

How do teams perform in their first game after a coach gets fired?

Surprisingly well. Most teams that lose a coach in-season have a bad record. However, in the team’s first game after the coach is shown the door teams play about .500 football (9-11 straight-up).

These coach-less teams are even better against the spread. Most are underdogs (16 of 20) but in the first game after the coaching change the teams have gone 12-8 against-the-spread.

On average, when a coach gets fired, a team is an underdog of 5.1 points in the next game. The Rams are currently 15 points dogs in Seattle on Thursday night.

Will the Ram, without Jeff Fisher, continue the trend and cover vs. the Seahawks?
