If you went chalk in your bracket, yesterday was great. Nothing crazy happened, sure some games were close but for the most part the day played out as expected. There were only two upsets. No. 11 Xavier topped No. 6 Maryland and No. 12 Middle Tennessee beat No. 5 Minnesota, yet the Blue Raiders were betting favorites so its hard to call that an upset. With few upsets how chalky was the first day of March Madness?

Moneyline favorites went 13-2 yesterday. Technically favorites went 14-2 but Villanova was such a big favorite there wasn’t a line for their game against Mount St Marys at some books. Look back through our database, yesterday was the fifth chalkiest opening day in the last 13 NCAA tournaments.

The chalkiest opening day in our database was the 2007 NCAA tournament. Moneyline favorites went 14-1 straight-up on the first Thursday of the Big Dance. The lone upset was No. 11 VCU over No. 6 Duke.

Yesterday wasn’t the most thrilling but here’s hoping there is more madness in the rest of March.
