Four teams will make the College Football Playoff but which programs are favored to play for the national title? The bookmakers at 5Dimes released odds for 50 schools to make and miss the playoffs.

Alabama is the odds on favorite to make the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide have participated in the four-team tournament in each of the three previous iterations and is the favorite (+255) to win the NCAA championship.

The most likely four-team bracket would consist of Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and USC. You can bet whether this exact foursome will meet in the postseason.

Most likely Playoff

  • Alabama/Florida State/Ohio State/USC: +1200
  • Any other team in the 4-team playoff: -2250

Even though this is the “most likely” playoff the odds suggest there is 95.7% chance at least one of these teams do not get to play for the title. Great news for the other 124 FBS teams in the country.

Will 2 teams from the same conference make the playoffs?

  • Yes +260
  • No -380

This is a debate had every year. It would take special circumstances for a conference to send two teams to the playoffs. According to the odds the Pac-12 (USC +140, Washington +425) and SEC (Bama -195, LSU +450) have a chance. Yet the odds for this prop suggest there is nearly an 80% chance it doesn’t happen.

What teams will make the playoffs? Better question, which won’t? Texas hasn’t had a winning record in three years but are you willing to wager $1,750 to win $100 that the Longhorns won’t turn it around?

The march to Atlanta, site of the 2017-18 National Championship, begins in August.
