Which player will be the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2017? On Wednesday Bovada.lv released odds for the most likely candidates. Here is a look at the early favorites.
Leonard Fournette is listed at 7/2. The Jags used the 4th overall pick to take the former LSU star. With a solid defense and a bad quarterback, Jacksonville will want to grind out games by feeding Fournette the rock.
Since 1967, 33 of 50 winners have been running backs. So it’s not too surprising to see Fournette, stepping into an immediate role, as the favorite. Another back that could win the award is Christian McCaffrey. The Panthers also used a top pick on the dynamic pass-catching back out of Stanford. You don’t take a player that high if you don’t intend on giving him touches.
The third favorite is Deshaun Watson at 6/1. Only eight quarterbacks have won the award but seven of the last 13 winners have been signal callers. The Texans traded up to get Watson. Houston has a big hole at quarterback and with offensive weapons in DeAndre Hopkins, Lamar Miller and Will Fuller, Watson has a chance to shine early.
A player to watch is Joe Mixon. Off-field issues caused him to fall out of the first round but he landed in a good spot with the Bengals. Jeremy Hill is averaging just 3.67 yards/carry the last two years and Gio Bernard is still recovering from a torn ACL. You could be getting some value at 12/1 odds.
Good luck if you place a bet. Remember, the winner can come out of nowhere. Last year Dak Prescott was 300/1 in May as the third string quarterback for the Cowboys.
