The playoffs are underway but half the league is focused on the NBA Draft Lottery on May 16th. With a loaded draft class here are the odds for each team to get the No. 1 pick.
The Brooklyn Nets (20-62) finished with the worst record in the NBA. Thanks to the Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce trade in 2013 the Boston Celtics have the right to swap picks with the Nets. There is a 25% chance that the Celtics, the No. 1 seed in the East, will get the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.
The Lakers will have to send their pick to Philly, because of the Michael Carter-Williams trade in 2015, if it falls outside the top three. There is a 53.1% that the 76ers get LA’s pick. The Lakers finished the season by winning five of their last six games and finishing with the third worst record in the NBA. If they had the second worst record there would be a 55.8% chance they get to keep their pick.
New Orleans will send its pick to Sacramento (Buddy Hield trade) unless it falls inside the top three. There is just a 4.0% chance that the Pelicans get to keep their pick.
Finally, Philly can swap picks with Sacramento inside the top 10 but if the Kings pick is outside the top 10 it goes to the Bulls.
How it works
Every team that doesn’t qualify for the playoffs is in the lottery. The team with the worst record has the greatest chance of landing the top overall pick. Only the top three picks are decided by the bounce of the ping pong balls, the rest as based on record.
