The 2017 Heisman watch has begun. The trophy is award to the most outstanding player in college football every year. It is early but we already know who the bookmakers think are most likely to win.
In February, William Hill released their Heisman odds with three favorites (Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold) at +700. Three months later the USC quarterback has taken the lead and is listed at +350 on 5Dimes.
Last year’s winner Lamar Jackson has the third best odds. Only one player, Archie Griffin, has won the award in back-to-back seasons.
Of the 34 players with current odds on 5Dimes, 23 are quarterbacks. Since 2000, signal-callers have won 14 of the 17 Heisman awards.
When William Hill’s odds were posted four defensive players were listed. That was silly. Only one defensive player has won the award, Charles Woodson in 1997. 5Dimes didn’t even bother listing a single defensive player with odds.
Who do you think will win the Heisman? We won’t find out until December but its never too early to start the debate.
