The British Open is golf’s third major of the year. The tournament begins Thursday at 4:47 am ET at Royal Birkdale. The field will consist of 152 of the top players in the world including many past champions. Which golfers are favored to win and what trends should we know?
Dustin Johnson (+1360) is the favorite to win the Open title. DJ will be playing his first tournament since missing the cut at the U.S. Open. Since 2005, the pre-tournament favorite has won just three times.
After Johnson, Jordan Spieth (+1390), Rickie Fowler (+1390), Jon Rahm (+1460) and Sergio Garcia (+1610) round out the top five.
Justin Rose has the sixth best odds at +1675. In last 20 years, there have only been three Brits that have won the cup.
Rory McIlroy was the most recent member of the United Kingdom to win the British Open (2014). McIlroy has missed three of four cuts coming in and is listed at +1675 to win.
Last year’s champion, Henrik Stenson is +2475 to repeat. Since 1970, only four golfers have successfully defended their title.
Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood (+2105) are two young guns looking to hoist the Claret Jug. In the last ten years, the average age of the Open winner was 36.
